So much happened at Gamescom today that I really had to think long and hard (hehe) about what I wanted to call “highlights”. There were so many great announcements from Ubisoft, Capcom, Sony, and EA that I just snagged a few of my personal faves from each panel.
Capcom had some surprising announcements, one of the largest of them being their new Resident Evil 6 mega-social site, residentevil.net. It’s Capcom’s plan to have RE.net track your personal stats such as total mercenary score, how good you are with a certain weapon, what enemy types you kill the most, and compare those totals with your friends…or enemies, however you live your life. Soon after the announcement the Capcom-Unity Blog had this to add:
“This not only lets you see how you compare to other players, but it also enables us to schedule online events that reward all participants with cool extras. For example, let’s say one weekend the goal is to kill 10,000 zombies. Everyone who has an RE.net account and plays during that time period will receive RE.net points that can be redeemed on the site for a variety of goodies – chief among them new costumes that appear in the actual game.”
As if the points weren’t enough, players will be crowned a “Champion” for the week and given a “champions belt” where they will defend it in the next weeks challenge. Kind of an incentive to continue playing week in and week out, if you care about fake belts.
Capcom wasn’t finished at Resident Evil, they also showed gameplay footage from their newest IP, Remember Me. It was also shown at last years Gamescom under the name “Adrift” from the developer Dontnod. In the short 7 minute footage you see the protagonist Nilin essentially change the fate of her target by altering his memories somehow. The whole game is very Watch Dogs-esque which is weird considering that game isn’t even out yet. You’ll also see similarities to Assassin Creed, Deus Ex, and the newest Hitman.
EA had a bunch of announcements, let me get the ones I don’t care about out first, Fifa, Madden, and Need for Speed news. Chlorophyll more like borophyll…who cares? Let’s get into the thick of what I care about, Dead Space 3 and the delightfully over the top Army of Two: The Devil’s Cartel. You can see the Dead Space 3 trailer complete with release date on our blog here, but before that, take a look at Alpha and Bravo from Army of Two destroy everything. No really, the environments are completely destructable, the new “Overkill” mode slows down time for both players to increase effectiveness, while adding explosive bullets…well they look explosive anyways. The Army of Two franchise isn’t bad, Visceral Games given the ability to use the Frostbite 2 engine only quantifies this games capabilities. I’m going to start hyping up this title now.
PlayStation had a very strong showing as well, revealing Killzone Mercenary for the vita, a new software update (v1.80) for the vita that will allow you to play PS1 games on August 28th, a new Assassin’s Creed III trailer on a boat, and announced three new characters to the already bolstered roster of PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. The three newest characters are Dante of Devil May Cry, Sackboy from LittleBigPlanet, and Spike from Ape Escape, one of my favorite video game franchises of all time. Of course each one of these new characters got their own trailer, but I chose to just show Spike’s, because well, Ape Escape is the best.
