This is probably a day late and a dollar short, but it was confirmed yesterday at GDC by the man, Hideo Kojima himself, that The Phantom Pain is in fact, Metal Gear Solid V. More appropriately titled, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
The trailers absolutely beautiful aesthetics come from the new “Fox” engine. Kojima didn’t reveal much else about MGS V‘s story, but you can clearly see many interesting characters from almost every MGS game to date, so the timeline could be from any direction. The infirmary scenes were later noted by Kojima as being the games light tutorial.
Sad news came when Metal Gear Solid alum David Hayter announced he wasn’t contacted to voice “Snake”, and it appears there is no future plans to involve him in the project. I personally think this is a ploy set up by The Phantom Pain team, just another thing to keep the fans and media guessing.
I’m a fanboy of the entire Metal Gear Solid saga, so I’m definitely looking forward to another chapter, especially one looking this visually appealing, and one that, according to Kojima, will feature many “taboo subjects”.
Oh and “Phantom Pain” comes from false pain in a limb that’s been amputated.
